Raised Gardens+

Spring of 2022 Natalie and her father built this 8'x8'x16' raised garden. We had to keep out the bunnies, deer, birds and other creatures. There is wire mesh on the bottom of these planters and fabric barrier on the walls to make the bed a little more long lasting. We also stained it and used redwood. We searched online on how to build raised beds and used a combination of designs to complete this. I gave it 2x4 lip on the top of the planter and the top of the structure which made it look more complete and also stabilized the structure. Size was based on the space, plus optimizing the cheapest size of the wood planks which is 16’. We went with 8' high so we could add shelfs higher up when needed. Besides that was the height of the 4"x4".

  • Watering is a variation of the Ceramic Olla Watering System which allow the soil to be watered automatically and only needing to fill the 5 gallon water buckets.

  • To fill the planter we used mulch and dirt from digging out the space for the bottom 6-7" and then filled the rest with organic garden soil from a local garden shop.

  • There are many ways to do raised garden beds. It is easy, a bit if work, but the result will be years of food. We are already eating food from our garden.

Vermiculture

Vermiculture is the culture of earthworms. Vermicomposting is the process by which worms are used to convert organic materials (usually wastes) into a humus-like material known as vermicompost.
